A late introduction (also diamond!)
A late introduction (also diamond!)
Hi there, my name's Jake.
I'm jumping on the bandwagon of veteran members posting retroactive introductions.
I'm 20 years old, male, living in England (surrey at present if you want to be specific), and I have a tendancy to overuse brackets when typing. I've just finished my first year at Leeds college of art studying Digital film, Games, and Animation (it's a Ba course, I'm just doing it at a college instead of a university). It's by far the most fun I've had in 15+ years of education, I'm surrounded by fellow geeks (,we have an entire wall of the studio dedicated to internet memes,) and get to learn about something I'm facinated by.
If you've met me already, or were paying attention when I listed the name of my college, you've probably worked out that I'm an artist. Or at least aspiring to become one. I've always detested the pretentiousness of most fine art (why yes, this brownish ink blob represents mankind's suffering and waste: that'll be £10k,) and have tried to find practical uses for my skills. My ideal would be to work in the film or games indutry as a concept artist; designing characters and worlds for a living.
I discovered Minecraft a few weeks before it entered beta, from watching let's plays by youtubers such as Seananners and Davidr64yt. I'd pretty much burned out on single player before I came here, but Escapecraft has been my first taste of the online multiplayer side of the game (part of the reason I'm so resitant to vote in "how are we doing?" polls; I have no frame of reference). I was introduced to Escapecraft in the form of an advert on The Escapist's job board. You can still find the original post by Sneaky-Pie here:

Essentially they were looking for someone naive and gullible, who owned their own pencil, to come draw pictures to help promote the upcoming Version 4.
I forget exactly why I agreed... something to do with building a portfolio, and getting free cupcakes. But I'm glad I did, this a fun site.

And now to the second part of my ramble. The part involving diamonds.
As I mentioned; I've been playing Minecraft for a while. I'd already burned out completely on single player a while ago, and while multiplayer is refreshing, it essentially boils down to the same thing in the end. The updates from Mojang have been too infrequent, and most of them too insubstantial to hold my interest. It's been more than two months since I logged on to the server for anything other than to see the progress on world 4, and even that's only infrequently.
I'm bored with Minecraft, and I don't think it's just a case of needing a new project. I'm sure this happens to everyone eventually. I doubt I'll be leaving the server forever, (I'm sure eventually Notch will release an update of enough significance to tempt me back,) and I certainly won't be abandoning the forums any time soon.
What does this have to do with diamonds you ask?
Well everyone in Minecraft needs a project, and for the first 40 or so hours of my time on the server mine was obsessively mining diamonds. I gathered quite a collection (in fact with Mydrox now an admin I'd be curious to know where I stand on the richest players list). I used them to crate a small diamond block house as seen here:
http://www.escapecraft.net/phpBB3/viewt ... hilit=hunt
(Nobody ever did claim the codes for HL2 episode One and Portal, too late now I guess.)
I recall seeing a thread a while back asking if if would ever reach the point where world 3 was completely stripped of resources like diamond and clay. And while those fears have been aleviated greatly since then by the opening of several new worlds, I'd still feel bad having so many potentially useful resources in the hands of an inactive player. So I've dismantled my house and plan to place the 644 diamonds (and some gold) in a chest just outside the spawn cuboid of world 3 (I'll leave a sign so it doesn't get confused with anybody else's box of diamonds). Anyone who finds it (and it shouldn't be too hard) can take as many or as few as they'd like. Hopefully they can put them to better use than very expensive building material.
*edit*
I've put them in dispensers instead. Hopefully that way people will be more inclined to only take a fair share.

Re: A late introduction (also diamond!)
It happens to all of us
Thats a bold move with the dia but it would demo the dia market, perhaps a contest? Or a hunt?

Checked the dispensers this afternoon: completely empty.
I guess that makes the plan a success.
