You cannot say it doesn't exist if you haven't seen it. ~Zinrius

Re: you wont be seeing me as much.
You are correct on all those points. I use a Toshiba Qosmio X300 (which was top of the line when I got it in November 2008), and the battery only lasts about an hour. Less if an actual game is running, for that matter. Also, putting it on your lap is a quick, painful method of self-sterilization. As for the weight, the thing weighs about 10 pounds. Finally, there are netbooks smaller than the AC converter block this thing uses.Jake55778 wrote:"gaming" and "laptop" really don't belong in the same sentence. Laptops are all about portability, functionality, and ease of use. To get the power needed for gaming usually means sacrificing battery life, heat efficiency (good luck having one on your lap once it heats up), portability (gaming laptops are usually larger and weigh more than a typical laptop. Not to mention that once you've shelled out for one you probably won't be inclined to risk it getting damaged/stolen by carrying it around.) and price (a gaming laptop will usually cost 2-3 times as much as an equivalent powered desktop, and of course the laptop can't be upgraded).
Re: you wont be seeing me as much.
well considering that i know how quickly a laptop can turn legs into pillars of fire i have a USB Fan/stand/lap guard AND if i forget that i have a neat absorbing mat to sit it on (gives about 2 hours more time on my lap)
and battery life isnt realy an issue for me. i tend to run them from the mains. (i still need it to be a laptop though as i do a lot of my gaming in between lessons and use it to take notes in class)

Re: you wont be seeing me as much.
Huh, my laptop never gets ridiculously hot, and I have it running for hours at a time.
And I keep it plugged in too (it performs better), so battery is rarely an issue.

Re: you wont be seeing me as much.
My laptop only gets hot when I'm in a warm room, then I have to douse it with water. It was obsolete when I got it several years ago, but it was cheap ($400) and performed quite well for 2 of the 3 years I've had it. As for battery, it really can't do anything without being plugged in, minecraft even lags when I'm using the battery.
Re: you wont be seeing me as much.
So many overheating laptops permanently plugged into the mains. Are you sure none of you wouldn't be better served by desktops?

I live in two homes, (My mum and my pa's) so I need a laptop for portability.
Re: you wont be seeing me as much.
nope. i need it to be mobile (i do work and gaming in college and at home).Jake55778 wrote:So many overheating laptops permanently plugged into the mains. Are you sure none of you wouldn't be better served by desktops?

Re: you wont be seeing me as much.
My advice, spend a bit of cash on one of those trays that have the fans on them. Saved my old laptop countless times.
Re: you wont be seeing me as much.

Depending on how old it is, might I suggest a thorough cleaning of the interior, as mentioned by another poster earlier? I think you hinted yours is a Dell, and I've found Dell laptops surprisingly easy to take apart. I can help you find a manual for whatever make/model your laptop is, if you let us know.
If you go for the new laptop option, Dell has a model with an AMD dual-core and ATI graphics for 498GPB: http://www.dell.com/uk/p/inspiron-m501r ... iron-m501r
"Gaming" implies an independent graphics card more than anything in a laptop, but those tend to drive up the price. AMD processors are cheaper, so look for those in your laptop to help offest the cost of independent mobile graphics.
Re: you wont be seeing me as much.
interesting. i can run around for a short time after i boot minecraft but then the frame-rate suddenly dies, literally it goes from 108 to 1 FPS in 3 seconds.
i mean look at this screenshot showing the difference on Debug mode.

Re: you wont be seeing me as much.
Have the Windows Task Manager running simultaneously, with the Processes tab displayed, sorted by CPU usage (high to low). Run the game and the task manager simultaneously, and watch for CPU usage when the spike occurs. Is there another program in addition to Minecraft that is hogging resources?
Re: you wont be seeing me as much.
nope. it even occurs if i shut everything (steam, Dropbox, Firefox, windows live messenger, even ADAware(i had to see if it would make a difference))MKindy wrote:Have the Windows Task Manager running simultaneously, with the Processes tab displayed, sorted by CPU usage (high to low).
