Chat experiment

As many of you know, I've been working to solve our chat problem with global, new users have mentioned that its overwhelming in global for them, hard to read rules, etc. We turned off global for new users, but in order to communicate, people immediately tell them how to get into it.

To solve this, We are going to try a combination of IRC, webchat and a plugin to integrate it all. If you are IRC savvy, point your client to escapecraft.net port 31337 and join #mine Be sure and use your MC name.

For those of you who are not into IRC clients, try the webchat at http://www.escapecraft.net/chat/

You can easily position your Minecraft window and the webchat window so that you can see both. Global chat is exported back and forth, and I'd advise you to turn off global in game if you are using the webchat/IRC.

Give me some feedback and let me know how this is going to work for you.

-- Phase 2 --

New players will be put into their own chat channel, other than Local. Only default and builder ranks will have access to this from the player base. Mentors and Mods will also be in there to assist. This will be a global channel so that they can discuss amongst themselves and help each other.

This will not do away with any other channels, this is just an effort to further help new people, without overwhelming global with them.

If you are already a builder, you can opt out of it with /leave n

I'm not sure when this will go live, just wanted to get the info out there for everyone. I'll update when we push it live.

I've seen several people comment that you need more than 1 monitor to do this. Now, I do have a widescreen monitor, but you don't even need one with this, just overlay MC above and over the webchat. If you want a picture of what I'm talking about, let me know.

This is how I do it: http://i.imgur.com/HfQMN.jpg

Here's my work setup, this is on 19" monitor and instead of using my command line irc, I have the webchat loaded.

Ok, the new channel is active, once you become a vet or donate for vip, you won't be able to talk in here.

Mentors are allowed in there of course.

Can people listen to the chat?

And is it possible to rejoin it after leaving it (both before/after VIP or donation)?

If your left the channel and you are still default or builder then you can rejoin it with /join n. All other players (except mods and mentors) cannot join/rejoin this channel.

Do people automatically get kicked out if they become Veteran or VIP?

You won't be able to chat in there, but it may let you listen, I'm not sure

Well I tried joining it earlier and it said I wasn't allowed in there.

So we can't even listen in.

Wont this potentially sever a communication link between Vets/vips and noobs?

This is why there is a link between them and the mentors =p The Mentors can help the new players so that veterans/vips can continue to play the game.
