If you still haven't done this, delete your Minecraft icon, redownload Minecraft from the website to get the latest launcher, and when the update comes, choose to not update. Now you can't complain about not being told, because we can tell you how dumb you are.

Don't use a texture pack updater as well, they automatically update the client as well.

Thankfully the one I use only needs to be used once, then all packs work just fine.

It wouldn't hurt to make a copy of your .minecraft folder/directory (umm, BEFORE launching the client) - just in case.

I got Minecraft in early April, and the launcher has news about previous patches and links and stuff; is this the latest?

Yes.
Yeah the old launcher had like none of that. It had a screen for username and password and that was it. If there was an update it forced the update. Back then we had to do some sneaky stuff with the a file WITHIN the .bin folder to make the game think it was on the lastest version yet it wasn't. That was always fun.

But yeah now you know.... and knowing is half the battle!

The other half is not being lazy and actually doing something about it but I figured that was a given. With people these days though you never know.
