A Year of the Flying Convict
A Year of the Flying Convict
Approximately a year ago today, I joined Escapecraft. Cool how a year later we've opened up a new world, right?
A little bit about my (humble) beginnings here:
My first few days on Escapecraft are hard to recall. I purchased Minecraft on Dec. 12th 2010, at that time porting my game between computers on a thumb drive. As most players do, unless you're a building or redstone genius, I was quickly bored by singleplayer and went off to try multiplayer.
As opposed to the usual method of Googling a server, I searched YouTube for a good one (this was the medium through which I discovered the game, so I figured there would be more information here). A trailer for "Escapecraft III: Fire and Steel" (or something of the like - it's no longer up, according to my searches) piqued my interest, as I had played the Escapecraft I and II puzzle maps in singleplayer.
Immediately, I opened the launcher and typed in the IP. This is where it gets hazy - I don't recall much; I seem to remember trying the server during Version 2 and being dissatisfied, but the dates just don't match up. Either way I returned days later to a vast new world - Terra - and a Beta version of Minecraft.
My first night here was interesting. Instinctively I wandered to the north, stumbling upon what would become the great Corinthian Empire. A humble "Site Contributor" - a Moderator, or perhaps even the server's owner if you'd asked me - saw me fumbling about and invited me into shelter for the night. I clung to him like a child to a blanket my first few days; he later compared me to "that little brother kind of annoying". You may know him as Furdabip.
Furdabip and I stuck together for a while. I watched as he dug his 50x50 quarry to bedrock (known now as Quarry Alpha, in Terra), and we went on a few resource hunts together. He and I were witness to Corinth's development from a small settlement into it's half-year stint as the server's largest empire, with holds spanning each world. Unfortunately, while walking back to Corinth from the spawn, I was mistakenly banned for griefing. It would be almost a month before my return.
In mid-January of 2011, I appealed on the forums and was unbanned because the moderator who'd banned me had failed to record it in the database (it was later proven that I had done nothing wrong). I returned to an unnamed, temporary map, where I met up with Furdabip again and built a home in an early incarnation of Briarton, his Corinth district. But upon return to Terra, I found that in my absence, Furdabip had given away my home in Briarton and I no longer had any possessions. After repurchasing and expanding my house, Furdabip and I soon found ourselves in seats of power in Corinth - he as Emperor, and me as a General. This would lead to another oh-so fateful event, our trip to southern Terra a few weeks after my return.
Searching partially for resources, partially for the fabled Borderpost, Furdabip and I began south. After a few days of trekking, we found ourselves crossing a large expanse of water (I by road, he by boat beside me). Out of the blue came, "Is that.. another player?" I looked to my screen to see another player standing not far from the two of us, but standing still and looking directly at us.
We exchanged short "hellos" and he jumped down to greet us, and to our surprise, died in an explosion of cobblestone and other resources upon impact. Furdabip and I collected his items and waited for his return, when he introduced himself as Derigin. It was dark by now, so he invited us to stay with him. Following closely, we arrived at Derg Country, a large expanse of land owned by our new friend.
We stayed here for the night, Derigin commented on my skin, and we quickly became friends; this was the beginning of the trio that has lasted months since. In the coming weeks the three of us would run the server's largest settlement (both Corinth and later, to a lesser extent, Beorn), making the first batch of Mentors, and two of us would even become Mods.
In the weeks between meeting and promotion, Derigin, Furdabip, and I engaged on countless adventures. We made several trips to the deep south (some of our makeshift huts can still be found today), went dungeoneering, built railways, palaces, districts, whole towns together. It has been a friendship that has survived bans and several promotions, and looks to be one that will stand the test of time here at Escapecraft. Derigin, Furdabip - I wouldn't be here without you two. You guys - and this wonderful, wonderful community - have made this the most enjoyable gaming experience I've ever come across.
Here's to another year!

Rawr! I'm glad you stuck around! Love you, brah. ![Very Happy :-D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)
I like Deri's story too. If you and I hadn't stumbled upon him, he has said he would probably have stopped playing. Makes me feel like I'm responsible for an Op and Op+'s position here. ^_^
Buuuuut, how III remember it, is you came to the server shortly before the 1.4 temp map, then "stayed the night" in my quarry work house. You then were gone for awhile and came back after the 1.4 temp map was up. We attempted to build a legit snow fort up north of it for a competition, and eventually gave up. It was then that you decided to build a sand/sandstone fortress near the spawn, which didn't save due to the server running out of memory, so not saving any changes. Once you came back to it completely reset after having spent lots of time on it, you stopped playing for a bit again. THEN, I decided to create the only temp map's town; Briarton. You were it's first resident and helped mold it a little bit for the others.
Then... after a few fires and griefings, TheGoodProfessor's house specifically, and a few funzies (Milo's Spongebob and forest house outside our borders), the Terra map came back up and Fyra was also born.
It was THEN, around mid-to-late-January that you helped form the Corinth Briarton.![Very Happy :-D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

I wish I had a cool story to tell. I just wandered underground then spent a long time collecting obsidian.
OT: Good read, I enjoy these "historical" escapecraft stories.

I would imagine that what really happened is a good mix between the two stories.furdabip wrote:Rawr! I'm glad you stuck around! Love you, brah.

I'm sorry, the "1.4 temp map" was actually the 1.2 temp map. It came out in mid-January, and we went back to Terra by the end of January. Fyra woulda been long after that...random980 wrote:Sorry, this is a little off-topic, but when exactly was the 1.4 temp map up? and about what date did terra come back?

Re: A Year of the Flying Convict
Ahh yes, the 1.2 temp map where I was blamed twice for being an arsonist...
There was a fire near a lava bin and everyone thought that the lava didnt do it so i got furd down in the mine and showed him how lava sets fire to near by wood. Literally moments later another fire broke out and I was blamed XD Thats when I first met furd, I think the first time I met aflycon was when I bumped into him between plith and briarton
In other gnus, I AM MOAR VET THAN CHU AFLY!

Re: A Year of the Flying Convict
Ah, here we go. When I mentioned Briarton in the OP, I was referring to the one still in Corinth today. My part in the temp map Briarton had totally slipped my mind. I recall arriving a day or so after the other residents of temp-map Briarton, and building a home underground while the rest of you experimented with the water ladder bug.furdabip wrote:I'm sorry, the "1.4 temp map" was actually the 1.2 temp map. Some of the dates in the OP must be inaccurate then. There's really no way to research when I was banned or returned; I've tried, every record of my posts then is long gone.
Okay, now I'm remembering. After my appeal I came back to the temp map, and then back to Terra ("lol furd where's my house"). I'll have to change that in the OP.
And for reference, Fyra came out in.. May or April.

Re: A Year of the Flying Convict
ah the 1.2 temp map! that does seem to make more sense (from memory fences came out in 1.4 and i remember being on the server before then) Ok so my time of joining is roughly the 28th of Jan. Almost a month before i joined the forums. Also i remember about 3 people making a line of logs leading to some lava at one end and to my house at the other. (was that you will???)
