Most things are, and since The Catcher in the Rye is lauded very often, most are likely to approach it with some sense of expectation.
The thing that annoyed me most was that the word "goddamn" appeared more often than conjunctions. I get that it was meant to be written by Holden, but that doesn't mean you can get away with making it a pain to read. It just came off as the author trying too hard to make it seem cool and edgy.
In the 1950s it was very cool and edgy indeed.
And Holden was a pretentious git. All his misfortunes were his own doing, and I've never cared less about a main character in any other book I've read.
And that's why he's a favourite of brooding, angsty teenagers and Beatle-killers. Congratulations! You've gotten through or managed to avoid that stage of your life, and have not killed any members of the Beatles.
