Firefly was an awesomely awesome TV show a while ago, following the "space-western" adventures of captain Mal Reynolds and his crew, many of whom were badasses. The show rapidly picked up a cult following, but was cancelled. This promoted uproar among the flans, and endless (pretty pointless) petitions were created to bring it back. The nearest it came to renewal was the film Serenity... until now.....

What kind of MMO are they hoping to accomplish with this?

A microtransaction one.

I think they've said that they may make it available on other platforms too. I assume that that will be Xbone arcade or something, though hopefully they'll do a proper online one for PC/Mac. Otherwise is silly.
