PSN INFORMATION STOLEN PLEASE READ

Post by Blackadder51 » 27 Apr 2011, 03:32

Thats right, all of it has been. I shall now quote the Escapist Article.
If you're reading this, then you're almost certainly aware that over the past week, Sony's PlayStation Network has been suffering some rather severe technical difficulties. Sony is apparently still trying to figure out what's going on, or at the very least isn't yet ready to disclose all the facts, and there's still no ETA for a resumption of services. But in a new status update, Sony revealed that PlayStation Network and Qriocity user data has in fact been compromised. And not just your PSN ID.

"Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID," Sony's Patrick Seybold wrote in a message being sent to all registered PSN account holders. "It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained."

"If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility," he continued. "If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained."

In other words, not to put too fine a point on it, whoever broke into Sony's systems got everything - everything. At this point, the situation appears to have shifted from a dispassionately amusing debacle to an absolute balls-out train wreck, certainly not helped by the fact that Sony may have sat on this information for nearly a full week before letting the public know just how badly it was compromised.

Sony advised PSN members to pay special attention to their credit card account statements and other related information, be alert for email, telephone and postal scams and change all passwords as soon as possible, which is to say, whenever Sony gets the PSN working again. It also regrets any inconvenience.

And it ain't over yet, folks. We'll keep you posted.

Scary Shit guys, change your passwords. Check your credit card use. Identify theft is real. Also I see any fanboys in this thread I will suspend, this is a very serious matter .

All I have to say is... your siggy quote nails it right on the head.

(Thankfully I don't have a PSN account... but hopefully the people who do don't get screwed)

Yeah, I was wondering why my PSN wasn't working, but I figured my internet was out.

Next thing I know, PSN announces this... Scary... Thankfully, as far as I remember, I never bought anything online...

skay the credit card data itself is encrypted BUT if you use your PSN password for anything else i suggest you change them.

Thank god I didn't use a credit card either...

Already talks of a class action for US users, if it has not actually been filed.

While there are legal protections in place to prevent persons from being liable for charges made on a stolen credit card, I wanted to take a moment to stress password security, since that is likely part of what whomever is responsible was going for. Perhaps the most dangerous security problem facing passwords isn't the strength of your passwords, but that many of us use the same password for multiple resources. Always use a different password for every service you use. Tedious though it may sound, you can come up with "algorithms" that exist only in your head to put together a seemingly random password for each site you use that uses information you know about yourself and the service the password is for. You can even do this with information they say never to use -- for instance (not a password I now use or have ever used), I can come up with this one with two really easy-to-memorize steps:

scp343eF11B1012!

Not my current Escapecraft password, but one I came up with for it using two sequences I picked out of the air and did a little tweaking to. Anyone who can figure that password out is a social engineering genius. :P

The only thing I'm worried in the slightest about is the credit card information. Our "personal" info was almost certaintly all over the interwebs long before this happened. Just look at Facebook, anyone can get your info from there. And anyways, who cares if they have your address. What are they going to do? Rob every PS3 owner in the world by going to their address?
