You will so want to read this.

Ever look at the attacks on Sony and feel rather annoyed at hackers in general? Can hackers be a force for good? MI6 shows us how it's done by messing around with Al Qaeda's bomb formulas.

as with everything its dependant on circumstances

with Sony it hurt a lot of people for no good reason.

with this one it prevented bomb making recipies from being used.

bit of a big difference
