Visual Proof That Movies are Getting Worse

If you look at the movies coming out of Hollywood these days, it seems obvious that they're getting worse. Cynics have gone as far as to proclaim the death of storytelling.
Movie studios, they say, are taking the easy way out: recycling old ideas that are a sure bet to attract audiences, regardless of quality. Comic book sequels for the geeks. Twilight adaptations for the teenage girls.
We process a lot of movie data here at Moki.tv, so we wondered whether this trend would be observable.
We looked at the 20 most popular movies each year, for the past 20 years. The key, we think, is to look for movies that some love and some hate, which is the likely profile of a bad movie that's "safely" manufactured for an existing fanbase. In other words, movies that are polarizing.
We looked at how polarizing each movie is by measuring the standard deviation of the ratings for each movie.
What We Noticed:
A recent spike in highly polarizing movies.
Movies like the 3 Twilight movies, the Transformers sequel, Fast and the Furious, and others all have really wide ratings distributions. These are all adaptations or sequels that appeal to an existing fanbase.
Sequels are (almost) always more polarizing.
You can filter the graph below by specific series, like Star Wars, Twilight, and Spiderman. Almost consistently, the sequels are more polarizing than the original. Studios can depend on sequels to reel in audiences, whether or not they make good movies. The one exception is the Batman series.

A fantastic article and a good read. I now can finally point people to something when I give my thoughtful opinions on why film today sucks.

I am so glad that it mentioned the twilight film's. Personaly i very much enjoyed the books. However when they prodced the movies i felt they had raped the book and made the wreched product into film to ram into pre pubesant girls eye-sockets. May be a bit graphic yes,but it shows the point.
All in all i completely agree with you sneaky.

... I didn't mind the books, dislike the movies.
But the abusive relationship 'OMFG Edward is perfect so you can never leave him evvveer even though you've known him from a week' overtones are my personal Squick.
Anyway, I think there are still great movies being made, the only problem is that the bad ones or polarizing ones are taking up all the attention, so most people have to search to find good movies.
People aren't promoting good movies, just money-making ones, and they used to be one and the same.

That's odd, from what I've seen of the books I thought they were pretty badly written.

I think perhaps I should prevent anyone from contributing to writing if they profess they like it.
One reason why:
But I shouldn't say much more.

ya know... I have to watch that movie again sometime. I've only seen it once, and I absolutely hated it. But everyone else seems to adore it.

I personally am not a fan of the film. To me is was just an evening with a very stupid man.

I've never seen it. Heard people talking about it though.
Just seems like one of those things I wouldn't be interested in really.

Cracked.com had a very good article along the lines of this topic:
http://www.cracked.com/article_18664_5- ... -same.html
I particularly liked the entry on teal and orange, and the part about 3D at the end opened my eyes to how some recent 3D films could possibly look SO much worse than the likes of Avatar (which I'll admit wasn't exactly original as far as plotlines go).
In my opinion the frequency of quality cinema hasn't been reduced, it's just that with the technology and know-how to make films getting cheaper every day, it is easier for anyone to just churn out the same crap over and over again while the decent films go ignored.
Real movies
are out there, it's just a question of looking.
