I saw this, this morning, and just had to share since I'm sure plenty of us are google-product users. It's food for thought, honestly.

I, for one, am a little concerned by this whole thing...

Data you don't have at least three copies of is data you don't care about.

This does not change the fact he lost 7 years of data though <_>

well, he wouldn't have lost the data, if he would have cared about it.

Exactly. The TOS says, and he even quoted it in that article, that an account may be terminated at any time.

I prefer when people consolidate all their trust into one company. Although to be fair I force them to do so against their will.

Ah well, ruining a life always amuses me. In fact, I'm going to go terminate a random account right now!

I honestly think it's less about being prepared with backups than he's been shafted for "doing something wrong" when he neither did anything wrong nor has any reason to not be told what happened.

Storing data online is never a good idea tbh. I mean it's safer to have a hard copy of everything, this guy just learned it the hard way.

Always, always have at least two backups offline.

Internet=Unstable.

Still, I feel sorry for him, and I would expect Google to respond, being the huge company it is.

There is ALWAYS a way to get it back. Always. If he goes through the proper channels, he can get his account restored. Google thinks their stuff is important, and have far more than 3 weekly backups.

I was going to type I feel for the man, but honestly I don't.

When I was in school, and even know I have hard copies of everything. Loseing ones email address I will admit is a massive pain in the arse, but work, documents, photos?!

1TB in Australia, the arse end of the world is about $60 and thats a TB let alone what he can get for a lousey 250gb or even a 4gb usb stick for the most important stuff, or even blank CD's.

Dude not even one back up, really?

As far as I know, there isn't really an easy way to dump all of your correspondence to a file from a web-based service without a whole lot of tedious copying and pasting (or, if there is, most people wouldn't know to look for it, or know how to do it). The amount of time it would take to do that for seven years worth of files would be prohibitive.

There's a new link in the OP explaining what happened and why his account was deleted.
