So while I and many Brits were asleep the PS4 was revealed:
So thoughts on it?
Costs: £349/€399
Destiny, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Watch Dogs, Kingdom Hearts 3, Final Fantasy XV and Mad Max were shown aswell so thoughts on them too .

I think the only slight downside seems to be that PSN will be mandatory for playing online. To be honest it's not that bad anyway, it's a much better (and cheaper) service than XBL, you get a heap of free stuff out of it too.

Man, Sony kinda crushed Microsoft this year, didn't it? Everything people complained about with the Xbone, Sony didn't do. No online requirement for SP games, no used game restrictions, cheaper price, cheaper online play... The only thing that really excited me at the MS conference was Titanfall, but that's on PC too.

I was a bit let down from watching the AC IV gameplay video... it didn't seem to appear as gripping and interesting as previous games have turned out being. Maybe my impression will change closer to release date, but so far the game doesn't seem as appealing.

Some of the exclusives on xbone looked pretty neat, though. I'm pleased microsoft managed to actually show what their console has gameplay-wise, and some of the exclusives in development seem pretty interesting (also, dat Battlefield 4 fail). It's almost as if microsoft is giving off a vibe saying that their console has more value to it because of certain exclusives and better system specs, so they're going to add irritating features like 24 hour lock-out after you drop your internet connection, or mandatory installation of each game you buy onto your console.

I haven't really watched much of the Sony conference to provide almighty judgement on the PS4, but I should get around to that at some point.

Better system specs? I thought the specs between the two were pretty much identical?

They aren't? I heard the xbox was providing a slightly better CPU, while PS4 had better graphic rendering and slightly more RAM.

Seems like both consoles have their own slight pros and cons in terms of system specs, but overall are near identical.

I noticed that too, kinda sucks. Still, it's cheaper than XBL, and they do tend to throw in a lot of free stuff with it too, so it's not that bad. Frankly I was always surprised that it was free for the PS3.

Other than that... It looks pretty good. By and large the same as the Xbone, but without the sillier features. I only really skipped through (and read the Escapist articles), but is it me, or have the been a bit quieter about the social features than they were at the initial announcement? Perhaps they twigged on that no one really cared.

Well the unfortunate thing is that it sets a trend. Xbox was the odd one out last gen in charging for multiplayer. But if Sony are doing it too now then it's just going to become the standard.

I'm having a hard time mustering any enthusiasm for this new generation.

I have always been ok with charging for multiplayer connection. It cost money to host multiplayer games on a server, even if the cost is just the electricity & internet connection. The issue I always had was hiding stuff that was already free else ware behind the multiplayer charge like access to Netflix.

I do wonder if accessing Netflix and whatever internet browser there is requires PS+. It really shouldn't, but they might go the Xbox route and require it for anything related that has an internet connection.

Looks like everyone dropped the ball this time around.

So far Sony has said the PS+ will be only needed to play the multiplayer part of its games not anything else like Netflix.

They only showed Minecraft on the Xbone to rub it in Notch's face that they are not dropping it so he have it ported to the PS4.

They didn't say it was exclusive to the Xbox right?

This just in. The guy who is working on the DayZ standalone has formally abandoned putting it on the X1 and has said he is considering putting it on the PS4 due to their lack of fucking with Indie devs.

To anyone annoyed that PS+ is required to play online, the consolation is that PS+ is (or has been so far, at least) the best deal in gaming outside of Steam. £39.99 a year for more than SIXTY PS3 and Vita games (about 5 games a month, plus extras whenever they feel like it) as well as a gig of cloud storage, automatic updates, discounts aplenty, and all that jazz. PS+ has rendered my need to buy games nearly obsolete with a continual library of quality stuff (XCOM Enemy Unknown and Demon's Souls this month alone, amongst other games).

TL;DR: Being a PS+ subscriber to play online ain't so bad, because you'll WANT to be one. If you own a PS3, you damn well already SHOULD be one.

The way my brain reads PS+ is like "Subscription Steam with more free stuff on top"

But that's just me.

Pretty much vall, pretty much. I just want freaking Titanfall. Mechs, jetpacks, and wallrunning on PC? Do want.

I'll probably end up getting a PS4 eventually, even if it's only because my dad doesn't want to spend a bunch of money on a gaming PC. I'll be wanting to play stuff with him online.

Back onto the random topic of ACIV, I guess my faith in the series was reassured a bit, after watching this gameplay video Ubisoft just released today.

I'm still disappointed it's not about Henry Rollins running around stabbing people in the neck. I'd pay a lot of money to play that.
