Richard Matheson had died, at 87. He wrote a hell of a lot, I Am Legend is probably his most famous book, but he also wrote The Shrinking Man, Hell House (my favourite) and What Dreams May Come. Some of the greatest Twilight Zone stories like Nightmare at 20,000 Feet and Steel (which that Real Steel film is based on) were written by Matheson.
Naturally, someone so awesome working for over 50 years influenced many, many people, such as Stephen King, George A Romero (inspiring Night of the Living Dead, making him indirectly responsible for modern zombie films) and Anne Rice (inspiring a lot of modern vampire stories, so, somewhat less awesomely, making him indirectly responsible for Twilight).
