Building a new computer

Hey all! I'm building a (mostly) new computer and I've run into a bit of a dilemma:
The only OS I have is stored in a partition on my current computer. I'm planning to use my current hard drive in the new computer and I'm aware that I can't just insert it as-is without formatting it first. My question is, is it possible to insert the hard-drive and run the OS install from the partition and just format and re-install the OS in one simple step? Or is it possible to burn the OS to a disk from the partition, then format the hard-drive and move it over?
I want to make sure I don't fry this new computer before I even get a chance to use it!
