A sudden phone debate!

Posted: 06 Oct 2013, 19:03
by Wildwill002
My current phone is as useful as 2 cups of sand in a desert full of diamonds. That being not very. So I need a new one. I've never really had to look for a phone before, what with being 17 and the youngest of the family, but now I've got a full time job and an income so I really would like a new one. Preferably under £200

Couple of things, I detest apple and stalwartly refuse to purchase any of their products, and the only thing I'll really be using it for is texting, watching youtube and checking gmail. Any ideas?

Well, I'm probably not of much use to you considering I have an iPhone 5.

I heard that the HTC One is a pretty nice android phone, so you may want to consider trying that.

You should check out the Galaxy S4, I've heard good things about it. :)

Out of the Android phones, in my experience Samsung has been a lot better about their phones in terms of quality and upkeep (how often they update, if they support updates to the next version, etc.). I have a Droid Razr HD, and Motorola is just infuriating me because even though it is not an old phone they have already released another Droid and dropped their plans to update mine. When it comes to Apple, go ahead and detest them if it suits you. They tend to be way overpriced until a new phone comes out, and seriously iOS7 just added a bunch of features that Android has had for a while now. However, iPhones have some damn nice cameras and screens on them, but some Android phones can keep on par on them or better.

Having only just recovered from the grammar seizure that title caused, I'd recommend the Galaxy S4. The only issue I've ever seen is the size, cause you feel like a tosser using one. However, there's the Galaxy Fire (?) which is more of a standard size (about the size of an iPhone, ish).

Sony make pretty good Android devices. I've not been displeased with my 3 year old Xperia Play yet!

They also have high res screens for youtube, and they tend to have good cameras.

The iPhone 5C looks pretty nice and I like iOS; it usually takes a while for a phone to become outmoded for Apple - Android it's very luck-of-the-draw.

It's also $99.

Don't get a Galaxy S4. They overheat and have shit battery life. Get an HTC One if you must get an Android.

The 5C seems kind of dumbed down to other iPhone models - I suspect it'd even be worse then my 5 - in exchange for a coloured case.

However, considering you're (wild) looking for something that is basic and that'd mostly be good for texting - and under 200 british currencies - , the 5C'd probably be good for you if you are willing to move past your hatred for Apple products.

As much as it would probably make life easier, I still stalwartly refuse to contribute to apple.

The phones that have been put forward are good and I would probably get the HTC One after some looking, but yes, I do need something under £200 as I'm on an apprenticeship wage. Only chance for me to get around £500 would be to arrange a poker game, but that may be tricky as I've got a full time job now.

ahahahah ye ahah aye ye bro ahaha swag yolo

In all seriousness, are you sure you'd rather sacrifice having a suitable phone because of... morals? I mean, Daemon's persistent on using Chromium as opposed to Chrome just because the former is open sourced, and because of that he's using a shitty browser... y u guys do dis?!?

Yes for a few reasons.

1. Because I prefer google as a company in many ways
2. Because I never break rules or morals I've created for myself. Ever.
3. Because if I lose the charger for it I don't want to have to fork out £50+ for a new one

There are more, but that would kick me off into a rant.

Chrome is Chromium with google branding. The code base is the same for both browsers.

The 5C is a (mildly) improved version of the 5. Got a more powerful processor, or something. Maybe 30 more seconds of battery life. For $99, it's worth it, if it comes in a reasonable color like ... grey.

Nothing wrong with Apple other than being money-grubbing. Their products are reliable, as long as you don't drop them. God forbid you fucking drop an Apple product.

I second this - you know how many Samsung TVs have cracked, fallen, and broken over the last few years that I've bought? They really are flimsy...

Apple is cleaner and more user friendly, Android hurts my eyes.

I can not tell you how many people I know who dropped their iPhones and had them shatter, even with cases. I know 2 people who sat down, stood up, and had a cracked screen. However, I only know 2 people who have cracked their Android phones, one of whom threw it across a room cause they were angry.

I shattered my iPhone 3G by dropping it a few years ago, so that's why it's also advisable to buy a good case for your phone (like what my phone has right now).

Plus too, you can't buy cases for TVs can you? :P

This includes upper end cases. They reduced the damage but they still cracked. Of course if you just make sure you're careful and you don't drop your phone, you should be fine.

Strongest argument I've ever seen from Rob. :^)

Really though, as long as you're not fucking around and don't drop your phone on its screen like an idiot, you should be good with an iPhone.
