That, good sir, is a Jungle Temple! I only ransacked it a little bit, so there's still some stuff if you find it

very cool. I went looking for one of those. But apparently, even flying I can't get very far before some player wants me to fix something.....

How far out did you travel aero?
Also Protip: Avoid the 12000 block Ocean in the south.

Well, I went to the west (or south if using Rei's) about 25000 blocks. Still a ton of ocean, but I would not advise going straight west cause that's the path I about stuck to.

Does exploring so far afield, and generating new chunks in the process, impact the server load significantly?

That is something I am also worried about, but since people go in straight lines they probably aren't generating too much.

That was one of the reasons I tried to stick to a straight line. But since there's only one or two of us out exploring at a time (usually), once we leave those chunks should be unloaded. But on the front end, lag may be had when generating the new chunks.
On a side note, I forgot how much fun exploring new terrain is (even if it's mostly ocean).

When you go to a new area, you generate 4.5 chunks in all directions. So, basically, 81 chunks with you at the centre.
Apparently, some people went very, very far out. Like to position 30,000+.
The PvP world is approximately twice the size of all the survival worlds put together. It was originally much smaller.
The really bad lag on Sunday was due to a different issue that I fixed. However, the large pvp world is an issue. And one I will be fixing this week.

think of it more as no more hurting the server.

Actually, I'm going to regen the world as 1.3, but keep the old spawn. You will not be able to grow the world any larger than the size I generate.

It will be just like the other worlds, a set size, and that is it, but it will be all fresh and I'm sure Tulon will put exploration into consideration.
