I respect your opinion and I agree to your arguments to some degree - I found her annoying and self-obsessed too at first, A Dog and Pony show left me confused too, but I found her to be a likeable character nonetheless as the series progressed. She was a laugh at the final episode, for example.

Not to mention, some of my favourite image macros involve her.

Whoa, okay, I didn't mean it that way, either. I didn't pick it up as an earnest threat, and I only tried to provoke a semi-serious discussion. I'm sorry if it came across all wrong. Just imagine me typing all that with a smile.
But because I love discourses I read that profile you linked to. I enjoy analyzing things, especially literary characters and plots. So I was curious whether I just missed something about Rarity that might've changed my mind.
So, the same goes for me - just because I find her dislikeable doesn't mean anyone else has to.

I'm asking you this because the show actually gets it's pace after a few episodes.

Around 5.

I saw the first, the second, the third, and a couple random episodes, mainly because I was told it got better later.
It's by no means a bad show, it's just not nearly as good as everyone claims it is.

I think a lot of it comes down to expectations. If you went into it on the assumption that it was just going to be a money grabbing remake of a 90's cartoon series based off of plastic pony toys, aimed squarely at little girls, you'd have been plesantly surprised by the mature humour, good writing, high production values, and gorgeous animation. Skip forward a few months to the point where bronies have taken over the internet, and proclaimed the show the greatest thing since sliced bread, and your expectations are bound to have been coloured somewhat.

The show is good, but it's never been great. There's certainly better stuff out there, it was just a surprise to find such quality in a show aimed at young girls. The fanbase has blown it's merits out of all proportion.

Every thing's underrated when you get into it pretty late. I watched the Hangover in April and it wasn't as good as everyone said it would be, and when I get minecraft it probably won't be as awesome than if I discovered it myself. If you don't like it I don't blame you, since most of it's fans are extremely positive about the show anyway.

True, I've been trying to get behind my affinity towards her myself. I eventually got to the conclusion that it's not the character I like so much but rather the voice actress. I love that voice, simple as that. If it wasn't for that (and if I wasn't so superficial and impulsive sometimes), I would have to decide between Rainbow Dash and Applejack as my favorite. (Rainbow's voice, by the way, I absolutely adore as well. Yes, it's those annoying cracks in it when she speaks that I love.)

But going further, maybe it's the mostly hidden potential Fluttershy bears (see her all manning up to face that dragon in "Dragonshy"). Maybe because people want to see her be developed. Maybe it's because people love the underdog, and she definitely fulfills that role, being passive, rather introverted and easily bossed around.
