Water
Water
Has any thought been given to having either a server or certain areas where open water is considered off-limits for construction?
I think it's pretty distressing when I've got a building that I put on the waterfront specifically because I liked the view and someone comes and builds a giant tower on the water directly in front of me. To me it looks trashy and wrecks the view that I setup my property for.
Like I said I know the current rules allow this, and that's fine. However, has anyone given any thought to having an area or 'world' with the water off-limits for those of us who want to build a "waterfront" property and not have to worry about someone building out on the water in front of us? Just curious.

Re: Water
just build a fence round a large area of water then build on the beach.

Re: Water
The thing is, then we'd be limiting what players can do in a way I don't think many of us will be comfortable with. When you start telling players where they can and can't build like that, it's hard to justify when it should stop.
What about players who build on mountains or cliffs for the views? Surely having someone build a floating castle a little way off ruins that view for them? Should we ban players from building floating structures too then?
Don't get me wrong, I completely understand where you're coming from. I hate it when people destroy my lovely natural views too. Best thing you can do is claim that little patch of water as your own. Mark it clearly so people know not to build there, and don't get too greedy with it - you don't need to protect anything you can't see from your window.

He's ancient and forever.

And... he's wonderful."
Re: Water
I guess what I'm getting at is, what about the idea of having a certain area, kind of like creative or skyworld or pvp, that has slightly different rules, like a "realism" world where you're not supposed to build floating structures or stuff out in the water. I'm not suggesting a server-wide policy (for the reasons you mentioned), I'm just wondering if anyone else is interested in there being more of a realism or "in-character" area, something with more of a deliberate architectural theme etc. Just curious if anyone else would like a designated place for that kind of thing.
Re: Water
You know, if there's any large amount of unclaimed land, you may be able to gobble it up and allow people to do the realism thing there. You would still technically own the area, but people would be able to live and work in it as long as they followed your rules on aesthetics.
Just a thought.
Just a thought.

Re: Water
Same here, I usually try to keep my buildings farily realistic.

Just realized I was kind of advertising our settlement on your thread. Thought it was helpful when I wrote it, but sounded kinda lame today. I should probably not be allowed to post in the middle of the night/ridiculously early in the morning. ![Neutral :|](./images/smilies/icon_neutral.gif)
